What should I expect during the OPP interview?

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) recruitment interview includes Local Focus and essential competency assessment components. Local Focus questions explore your background, motivation and understanding of the OPP, while essential competency questions examine behaviours and experiences relevant to policing.

The interview structure and instructions may vary. EvalTick focuses specifically on developing the behavioural competencies relevant to the essential competency portion.

The essential competency component of the OPP interview assesses how applicants have demonstrated important policing-related behaviours through their previous experiences.

Applicants may be asked to describe situations involving problem-solving, communication, self-control, teamwork or other relevant competencies.

EvalTick helps applicants select appropriate examples, organize their responses using STAR and strengthen the behavioural evidence they provide.

Established Ontario policing competency frameworks identify seven behavioural competency areas:

  • Analytical Thinking

  • Self-Confidence

  • Communication

  • Flexibility and Valuing Diversity

  • Self-Control

  • Relationship Building

  • Achievement Orientation

These provide a useful foundation for interview preparation. However, they should not be interpreted as a confirmed list of the competencies currently scored in every OPP interview.

EvalTick helps applicants develop behavioural examples relevant to policing competencies using structured, expert-developed evaluation rubrics.

A strong behavioural interview answer should clearly explain the situation, your responsibility, the actions you personally took and the results you achieved.

EvalTick uses the STAR framework — Situation, Task, Action and Result — to help applicants organize their experiences and provide relevant competency evidence.

The emphasis is on demonstrating what you actually did, why you made particular decisions and what you achieved.

STAR and SAR are both commonly used structures for behavioural interview responses. STAR includes Situation, Task, Action and Result, while SAR combines the situation and responsibility into a shorter opening.

EvalTick uses STAR as its primary development framework because it helps applicants present complete, well-organized behavioural evidence.

Applicants should always follow the interviewer’s instructions if a particular response format or answer length is requested.

No. EvalTick focuses specifically on developing essential interview competencies.

The Local Focus portion involves your understanding of the OPP, reasons for applying, personal background and other recruitment-related considerations.

Applicants should prepare for that portion separately through research into the OPP, its policing responsibilities and their own motivation for joining.

EvalTick uses proprietary, expert-developed behavioural competency rubrics with ten predefined scoring dimensions.

Your responses are evaluated against these established criteria, providing competency scores and targeted feedback on your STAR structure and behavioural evidence.

AI supports the interaction and evaluation process within the predefined rubrics. The feedback helps you identify strengths, recognize areas for improvement and develop stronger examples.

Yes. EvalTick allows you to practise behavioural competency questions using either your voice or text.

You can review your scores and feedback, identify areas for improvement and attempt questions again using your own experiences and words.

Progress tracking helps you see how your competency development changes across multiple attempts.
